Sweeping Debris into Bothell City Streets and Gutters is Illegal

Please do not sweep debris from your yard into the street and gutters.  The debris is not only harmful to our waterways but it can also obstruct the drainage system and cause unnecessary build-up in storm retention vaults.  The city prohibits the sweeping of debris in to the gutters as stated in city code 8.44.150:  “No person shall sweep into or deposit in any gutter, street, alley, or other public place the accumulation of litter from any building or lot or from any public or private sidewalk or driveway.  Persons owning or occupying property shall keep the sidewalks in front of their premises free of litter.” (Ord. 697 § 9, 1973). The violation of each code can carry a fine of up to $250 per day.  Enforcement would depend on the type of dumping, amount, and circumstances.  If the material dumped enters our storm drain system it can incur additional fines which also escalate according to the substance, time, severity and circumstances.
